<< Return to School Listings Central Junior High School, located on 7.2 acres of land just south of Downtown Lawrence, has served its students well through many transformations. The school originally opened its doors in 1923 as the city’s post-World War I high school. Named Liberty Memorial High School, the building stands as a monument to high school students and graduates from Lawrence who lost their lives in the war. Upon the opening of the current Lawrence High School in 1954, Liberty Memorial became Lawrence Junior High School. As the city grew, the school district needed an additional junior high school to serve students. To avoid confusion when the second junior high school opened in 1960, LJHS was renamed Central Junior High School. The school currently serves approximately 443 students in grades 7-9.
