Langston Hughes School, Lawrence's newest elementary school, is in a relatively new housing development in western Lawrence. The school, which was built in 2000 at 1101 George Williams Way, was named for Langston Hughes, an African-American writer and poet who lived in Lawrence as a child. Read story.

New York School is in one of Lawrence's oldest neighborhoods just a few blocks east of the city's downtown at 936 New York St. The school was named after New York Street, where it was built in 1937. Read story.

Constructed in 1994, Prairie Park School, 2711 Kensington Rd., is one of the newest schools in Lawrence. The school was built on 27th Street, near Prairie Park in the Chaparral subdivision. Many of the older schools in Lawrence were named after people. But when Quail Run School was constructed in 1988, the school board decided to go in a different direction -- naming the school after the surrounding housing development in western Lawrence. Read story.

When school district officials were trying to figure out in the early 1990s what to call a new school being built in southwest Lawrence, they didn't have to look far.
