From a lively music scene to an excellent education system, the city of Lawrence has a lot to offer its residents. In addition to renowned attributes, the community also has hidden gems ready to be explored. Whether you just moved to the area or are wanting to discover something new, these hidden gems of Lawrence are worth a peek.
1) The Wishing Bench

“Sit and make a wish, you will not be disappointed.” So reads the sign that hangs on East Lawrence’s whimsical Wishing Bench. Located at the corner of 9th and Delaware, this bench is decorated with colorful yarn and fabric, locks and other fantastical items from past wishers.

2) Wells Overlook

Located east of Highway 59 on the south side of County Route 458, Wells Overlook is a scenic lookout point that allows you to see all of Lawrence. The park was donated in 1971 by William Wells. It offers a picnic and shelter area, but the main focus is the observation tower. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
3) Peace Poles
A Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of hope for peace on Earth. The poles display the phrase, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight different languages on all sides. There are multiple Peace Poles in Lawrence, and in 2010 that number rose to 12. The locations of the poles include South Park, Unity Church, First Methodist Church and Veterans’ Park.

5) Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition

Lawrence is already known for its vibrant art scene, but did you know that the downtown sculptures change each year? Since 1988, the Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition has showcased the talents of local and national artists. Take a guided self tour by using the 2019 ODSE Guide and Map.
